People who get flu shots every year know why. It is part of their system to stay healthy and avoid long stints of sickness, especially from the flu. People who don’t get the shot believe they don’t need it. They believe because they are young, or healthy that the flu shot isn’t for them. They don’t need the shot because there’s no way to know if the shot really protects them from the disease. However, with all the different strains out there, for the most part, the older people get, the more apt they are to get the flu shot every year as a part of their plan to stay healthy.
When I ask farmers what their plan is to raise a top crop during the upcoming growing season, most reply, “ well it depends on the weather.” My response is always the same. If we wait for problems to show up in our crops before we address them, the damage Is already done, isn’t it. People who get the flu shot don’t wait to see which strain it’s going to be before they get the shot. Instead, they use the flu shot to keep them healthy. They know getting the flu is more serious than the side effects.
So, are you planning to farm next year? Are you planning to raise the best crop possible? Assuming you answered YES, it only makes sense to put together a plan to raise a top crop, regardless of what you, or any weatherman may think the weather is going to do. That’s why I consider developing a cropping plan the same as giving your crop a flu shot. Like flu shots, the cropping plan is the system needed to protect every plant all season long, regardless of the “strain” of attack that hits your crop. We don’t know what those attacks may be or if and when they will come.
The degree of impact on a plant from heat, wind, drought, insects, and disease can be greatly reduced by creating a system and supplying the plants with what they need before the effects of the attack are visible.

Employing an integrated system is the only way to ensure a crop is fully protected from all the variables that diminish your yield. We can’t predict what’s going to happen this coming season. We can only prepare for what could happen. That means putting together a prevention plan for your crop, giving it a flu shot, a strategy to treat the entire plant, and keeping it healthy all season long.
